Lurking in the shadows of some Utah waters lies what some believe is
the monster of all freshwater fish. The non-native Northern Pike has
been introduced into a few state waters. You can find them in waters
such as: Yuba, Lake Powell, Recapture and Redmond reservoirs. And
while they don't grow to record size around here these fish can still
reach lengths of three to four feet and have become a popular sportfish
for many anglers.
The clamp-like jaws, roof of the mouth and tongue of the
Northern Pike are all covered with rows of razor sharp teeth which
enable this predator to eat fish, insects, frogs, mice, muskrats and
even ducks. In fact, one study estimated a population of these fish ate
1.5 million waterfowl on a refuge in Michigan!
