SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Utah's Mormon Tabernacle Choir is approaching another musical milestone - the 100th anniversary of its first recording.
Music Director Mack Wilberg says the choir first recorded its work in September of 1910. Wilberg says choristers had to huddle around two 5-foot-long acoustic horns that were suspended from ropes in the Salt Lake Tabernacle. Female singers had to remove their hats.
In the decades since, the all volunteer group - which today has 360 members - has recorded 175 albums, earned five gold records, two platinum records and a Grammy award.
To mark the upcoming anniversary, on Thursday the choir will
release a three-disc combination CD/DVD that includes digitally reworked versions of early recordings and rarely-seen video of choir performances.
