No formal charges, but the charges that are expected couldbring about the death penalty.
That’s because the suspects, Nathan and Stephanie Sloop areexpected to be charged with aggravated murder.
Friday morning, the Sloop’s made their first courtappearance. The only thing Nathan and Stephanie Sloop said in court was yesyour honor. Both were brought in separately and both did show emotion in thecourtroom.
This case has brought about a lot of anger and feelings inthe community and some showed up to express that.
31-year-old, Nathan Sloop and his wife of just one week,Stephanie Sloop, make their first court appearance since police arrested themfor the horrific beating and murder of Ethan Stacy.
Both appeared separately in shackles and red jump suits.
Nathan cried while standing before the judge, but that meantnothing to some who watched.
Emotions and tensions were high as onlookers expressed theirdisgust of the Sloops. Nathan’s mother was also at court, but said nothing toreporters.
Two hours earlier, the Davis County Attorney’s Officeannounced they will not be filing official charges, but in a surprising movedid announce that Stephanie is also expected to be charged with aggravatedmurder just like Nathan.
This means they both could face the death penalty.
Prosecutors are still waiting for the exact cause of death,but we do know Ethan was beaten, burned, and buried in a shallow grave.
The evidence against the Sloop’s is still coming in, that’swhy official charges are not being filed.
The Sloop’s both remain behind bars without bail which theyboth agreed with in court.
Official charges are expected at their next court hearing onMay 28th, two weeks from now.
If they are charged with aggravated murder and convictedthat could mean the death penalty life without parole or 25 years to life.
